In 2019, our Hawthorn team all decided that we would aim to complete a physical goal that was way beyond our capabilities from that current point in time. The goal had to be something that both scared and excited us at the same time. A goal that was pushing us physically and mentally. We have called this our "Stretch Goal"
- What is your Stretch Goal and why have you chosen this?
My Stretch goal is to compete in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament that is taking place in November. The reason I choose this as my stretch goal is because it's definitely a step forward in my martial arts training. It's not only a very physically demanding goal but also takes great mental strength. I can't pass up a challenge like that.
- What are you going to ensure happens to achieve this goal and what does your training look like?
To achieve my stretch goal, I need to keep my physical strength up whilst focusing on getting fitter. I'll do this by training a full body weights program three times a week. A minimum of three Jiu Jitsu session per week. It is amazing how physically exhausting Jiu Jitsu training is. I need to improve my endurance quite significantly between now and November. In order to do this, I have constructed a Cardiovascular interval program which includes boxing, running and plyometric training.
- What scares you the most about your goal?
The build-up and anticipation of the competition. It's already March and I still have a long way to go before I am ready. I need to add more to my arsenal such as various techniques around submissions, counter moves, defensive positions etc. I will be doing five fights that day and it takes a lot of will power and cardio fitness.
- What are you most excited for?
I am really excited to actually compete! I've never done an official tournament before. I am excited to show off what I have learned and how far I have come in such a short time.
- What difference is this going to make to you after you have achieved this goal?
This is a really hard question. It's going to give me further confidence to keep going on to bigger and better tournaments as well as moving forward with my belt grading.
- Do you have any tips/tricks for someone who is thinking about pushing their own comfort zone with health and fitness?
Firstly, you just have to do it. Doesn't matter if you're tired or not feeling it, just go and get it done. Secondly, ask for feedback, whether that's from your coach or trainer. I've always found getting solid and constructive feedback very useful in all avenues in life. Lastly, you have to be passionate in your goals. It has to be something you really want to do for yourself. If you're passionate about something it makes it easy to wake up each morning do it and persevere through tougher times.
