The road to living a healthy lifestyle is filled with speedbumps, wrong turns and difficult to navigate paths. Although we wish the journey was straight forward and simple, the reality is that it in fact isn't. The sooner we come to terms with this, the better off we will be and more prepared we will be to tackle to obstacles along the way. Here are 3 simple strategies and tips to help you gain success.
- Mistakes and errors are bound to happen. Every mistake you make and learn from will bring you closer to success. The common mindset is that when you miss a workout or eat a bad meal, the whole plan is out the window and you may as well not even try. When we refer to the stages of change, relapse is actually part of the process, so if we understand this and look at it objectively, we can actually use this relapse as an opportunity to learn. Michael Jordan, the best Basketball player of his generation was famous for trying new skills and failing, using this failure as a lesson to push him one step closer to skill mastery.
- Don't worry about looking good, worry about achieving the result. As a population, often we are hesitant to try something out of our comfort zone or put ourselves out there in case we fail and are looked down upon by our peers. Remove the fear of everyone else and instead focus on the fact that if you do take a chance to succeed, you may fail but you also may achieve exactly what you want to! Taking a chance to grow and evolve will always top not trying at all.
- Pain + Reflection = Progress. The pain of failure can do many things to us. It can force us to reflect on the actions we took to cause the failure in the first place and re-assess to see if things can be done better. This reflection will then therefore make progress towards your goals as you will look to find a better way to succeed. Use the pain of failure to empower you, not tie you down!
