The new year has begun and we are instantly flooded with the discussion of "what do you want to achieve this year" and "New Year's Resolutions". It may seem strange, but ANY time is the perfect time to set a new healthy habit or standard/expectation for yourself. Waiting until January 1st and setting goal for the sake of it is one of the main reasons that by the end of January - when asked "hey how's that resolution going?", often the answer is " what resolution..." or simply "it's not!"
It can be agreed that a new year brings new opportunities and a renewed focus. In 2020 we want you to challenge yourself to make this the healthiest and happiest year. Start EVERY day reminding yourself of what you have to be grateful for, what makes YOU happy, always gravitate towards that, and if necessary be selfish where appropriate and put yourself first. Resolutions will ultimately fail due to not knowing exactly where you are in your life at the present moment or not having these goals attached to what truly makes you happy.
So, before we set new goals it is important to take stock and review the year just passed. We want you to complete a quick review of 2019, and answer the following questions. Be honest with yourself, take the time to write down/record your answers!
- 3 Highs of the year, how did it make you feel?
- Any lows - Why did it happen/what was the root cause? How did you respond? And most importantly - what did you learn from the experience?
- What needs to happen this year for you to have a successful year? What would you need to do/Stop doing to allow this to happen?
Once you have reviewed your answers (remember this is a review of YOUR year, not your work colleagues, kids or spouse), we are now ready to create a sustainable platform and set rock solid goals for this year!
Create goals in the following categories:
- Health and fitness
- Career
- Financial
- Spiritual
- Family
Create your "Top 3" in each category and try to spread them out so the categories are evenly weighted. A great way to do this is to join them together i.e. Organise a family holiday - instantly requires a financial component, and then tie in a fitness event or local attraction that requires you to train or follow a program.
Most importantly you need to ensure you have a positive connotation to the goal or connection to the goals so that you ACTUALLY enjoy working towards them! There is a common saying that "life is more about the journey than the destination". The goal provides a fantastic checkpoint or milestone, but the process towards the goal is what creates the lasting memories or cements permanent change. There is no point setting a goal if the journey seems too difficult or the result doesn't have a positive outcome for YOU!
Ask yourself the question, when December 31st 2020 rolls around and you have ticked off all the goals you have written down, how would you feel? Would you be PUMPED that you acheived so much? Would you shout from the rooftops about how awesome your year was? If the answer is YES then you have created something truly magical, and just like a snowball, a successfull year will build into a bigger year next year, then the next year and so on!
Make 2020 your best year for YOU!
