Long term and weight loss that leads to a sustainable lifestyle will come from ensuring adequate carbohydrate intake.   Low carbohydrates are usually linked with 'diets' that signify there is an end date.  That end date usually means oh thank god, I can eat bread, chocolate and fruit again, where is it?!

Low carbohydrate diets can have you feeling lethargic, possibly dehydrated, constipated and dizzy. You are taking out our most important fuel source - carbohydrates!  Usually you won't want to feel like this for long, hence the 'diet' won't work for you.  You may also feel cravings for foods that you miss or don't usually have.  This is because your body is lacking energy from carbohydrates and wants it fast.  The simplest form of energy for us is sugar... and bingo, you're eating a bag of chocolate biscuits before you know it.

Having carbohydrates daily speeds up your metabolism.   We know that the metabolism (including muscle mass) accounts for 70% of your body's fat burning ability.  Some research has indicated that resistant starch, from brown rice for example, moves through your digestive system, and helps the body release fatty acids that encourage fat burning and preserve muscle mass.

Not only will carbohydrates leave you feeling satiated but help control cravings. Be sure to include the right sources of fibre rich carbs in your diet to support healthy fat loss, control your appetite and work long term.  These include but are not limited to brown rice, sweet potato, white potato, pumpkin, oats, barely, lentils, beans - white, kidney, black, vegetables, fruit etc.

Eating frequent meals, moving more, having healthy choice carbohydrates with protein and fat are all great ways to start your weight loss journey.

Carbohydrates are not the enemy - as long as you're eating the right kinds, in the right amounts and at the right time you are on your way to a totally maintainable way of losing weight and eating more food!
