Clients often doubt their ability to do an event but when set a challenge to do it for charity, it becomes easy. Why is it that doing something for someone else is often easier than doing it for ourselves?
Supporting a charity event digs deep into our own core values and brings out the best in us. Often the feeling of helping others takes away from the effort required for the training and the pain or discipline of getting it done. The spirit of generosity it provides also adds to the great feeling of achievement you get when the event is over.
Often when we commit to a crazy 50km walk goal our friends will ask why? Positive supportive friends will think you're awesome and help you get your goal and possibly want to join you however, those negative influences in your life may let you know that it will be hard or maybe it's just beyond your ability. The great thing about doing it for someone else is that it provides you with enough justification to continue and conviction to complete the event. Your friends may not want to get out of their comfort zone but many of us are happy supporting those who are.
Supporting charities isn't always about donating money or attending charity nights. Training for months towards a goal builds a community. Turning up and doing the job with a supportive team surrounding you is generally the core aim of the charity you are helping. It may be a community across the world in a remote place that you will never visit but knowing your community helped those in another truly makes the hard work worthwhile.
There are so many events to choose from throughout the year, from ocean swims to marathons, trekking Kokoda to seeing the sunrise on Kilimanjaro. If there is an event you have always dreamed of doing maybe doing it for charity is the perfect reason to get it done.
