When most people say they want to lose weight, what they really mean to say is that they want to lose fat and certainly not water or muscle.

But too often there is no clear distinction between weight loss and fat loss as the primary tool used to measure progress is scale weight and doesn't give a clear indication of what is really going on inside the body.

There are a few ways we can combat weight loss and focus on fat loss, the first being the way we measure your progress. Rather than only tracking scale weight we need to understand what's happening inside our body, using our Bioscan which uses bioimpedance technology we are to accurately give you a breakdown of the good stuff - skeletal muscle mass, muscle protein and nitrogen, bone mineral estimate and total body water, while at the same time working out how much is the bad stuff - total fat mass.

Once we work out these metrics the next step will be determining how much protein you need to be consuming to ensure there is no muscle loss, this will vary from person to person and it is best to chat to one of our fitness professionals to determine how much is right for you.

The next step is to determine how much fat and carbohydrates you need, again this will vary from one individual to the next and should never be considered as a one size fits all or even a one size fits many approach. It is completely individual and there are a number of metrics that will determine what is right for you. Cutting out either of these macronutrients is often the first port of call on "weight loss" journey which couldn't be further from the truth, cut out your fats and your body can no longer absorb fat soluble vitamins or produce sex and adrenal hormones, cut out carbohydrates and your depleting your body of stored glycogen these limits your body's ability to store water great to be lighter on the scales however not so great when we are aiming to lose fat not water and glycogen.

Where do i go from here?
